The Thurmont Lions Club
First Annual A.R.T. Festival
(Art Revealed along the Trail)

Thurmont_Lions_Art_Walk

Thurmont Troop 270 Scout Patrick Bresnahan and his mom Julie Stellitano were onsite bright and early with many other Troop 270 Scouts to help with setup

Saturday, June 27th was a spectacular day to be out and about along the Thurmont Trolley Trail. The Thurmont Lions Club hosted their first annual
A.R.T. (Art Revealed along the Trail) Festival.
The event featured entertainment including the Catoctin Promise Band, Elower Dancers and a performance by Tyrone Snowden. Set up along the length of the trolley trail were exhibits, demonstrations and special guests. The exihibits included hand crafted jewelry, wood carving, face painting, bonsai, Cecil the Cycling Clown, the Frederick Keys “Keyote” and many other interesting displays. The program started at 11:00 am and concluded at 5:00 pm with a rededication of the trail to recognize the recently added features. The recent additions to the trail include benches, litter receptacles and signage.
Many residents took the opportunity to walk or bike along the trolley trail to the Regional Library to listen to blue grass music or watch a puppet show.

Roddy Road Covered Bridge Roof Repair

Thurmont_Covered_Bridge_001_JAK_7991

Workers attach new edging before placing the roofing on the Roddy Road covered bridge. Due to the longevity of the
standing seam roof being applied, this may have been be the last opportunity this century to see the bridge roofless.

RoddyCoveredBridge

Be sure to check out the photos and to see how much
hard work and fun went into this project.

Dean Fitzgerald and his crew from Fitzgerald Heavy Timber Construction spent Saturday morning removing the roof from the Roddy Road covered bridge, they then put a new standing seam roof on in the afternoon. The scene was quite hectic as the crew of almost 20 worked using two man lifts and a pile of roofing tools. During the day many volunteers also took a part in the work including County Commissioner Charles Jenkins. After a long day the crew and guests enjoyed a picnic dinner with musical entertainment. The day was capped off when the crew and guests danced a Virginia Reel inside the bridge under the new roof!
Click here to see photos from the day.

The labor and roofing materials were donated to the residents of Frederick County by Dean and Cecelia Fitzgerald. Refreshments and other items were provided by many local businesses including Weis Market, Hillside Turkey Farm, Mountaingate Family Restaurant, Main Street Sweets of Emmitsburg,
Ace Hardware,and Catoctin Mountain Orchard.

Roddy Road Covered Bridge Repair
Come watch and help as Dean & Cecelia Fitzgerald of Fitzgerald Heavy Timber replace the damaged roof on the Roddy Road Bridge with a new standing seam metal roof. The work starts Saturday June 6th at 7:00am. There will be music from 1;00pm-8:00pm with dancing on the bridge!
