2009 Nominating Convention

A sizable group of residents crowd gathered at the town meeting room for the 2009 Nominating Convention.  The Convention was opened by Mayor Burns, he then nominated Carol Robertson to officiate over the convention.  There are two seats on the Board of Commissioners as well as the Mayor’s position up for election this year.  Current Commisioners Wayne Hooper and Ron Terpko were nominated along with John Bean to run for the two open Commissioner seats and Martin Burns was the sole nominee for the Mayor’s seat..

The Candidates for the 2009 Municipal General Election

These are the four candidates nominated during the August 25, 2009 Nominating Convention.
L. to R. Wayne Hooper, John Bean and Ron Terpko for Commissioner and Martin Burns for Mayor.

The nominees provide the following comments regarding their goals and objectives as candidates:

Wayne Hooper,
Candidate for Commissioner
Wayne is currently serving in his 20th year as a Commissioner and wants to pursue a “Green Initiative” which would include reviving the dormant Bio-Mass project.  He is also intent of finishing up many loose ends including the Master Plan update, ordinance review and Code review.

Wayne is married and has lived in the Thurmont area his entire life.

John Bean,
Candidate for Commissioner
This is John’s first foray into elected office. He counts his levelheadedness and people skills as two of his best assets. If elected he will focus on managing growth, the municipal budget,  facilities and employees.  John’s goal is to see that Thurmont residents get good services at a reasonable price.

 John is married with one daughter has lived in the Thurmont for 7 years.

Ron Terpko,
Candidate for Commissioner

 Ron is now serving his third term as Commissioner and his goals for the next term would include completion of Eyler Road Park including restrooms, concession stand, field work, roadways and an amphitheater.  He would also like to see long needed upgrades and improvements at the Community park..

Ron is married, has three sons and has lived in Thurmont for 17 years.

Martin Burns,

 Mayor

 Marty is now serving his third term as Mayor of Thurmont and his goals for the next term would include seeing the 1.4mil in state loans spent on the I & I repairs.  He would also like the see the County BOCC and Thurmont BOC reach an agreement on the equitable distribution of the fire tax revenues.  He is also anticipates the revival of the Main Street program and looks forward to filling the empty store fronts in Thurmont with viable businesses.

Marty is married, has a daughter & son and has lived in Thurmont since 1993.

REGISTER TO VOTE!

You must be registered to vote in the town elections.  Voters must be 18 years of age, a US citizen and a resident of Thurmont.  Those currently registered for Town, County, State or Federal elections need not register.  For those not currenlty registered, voter registration can be completed at the Town Offices at 10 Frederick Road by appearing in person and filling out an Application For Registration Of Voter.  The town offices are open Monday through Friday from 8:00am - 4:00 pm. In addition to the regular office hours there will be two days with extended voter registration hours. On Monday September 10th
 and again on Wednesday Sept. 19th resident will have until 7:00 pm to register.  The last day for voter registration will be September 21st.  Those wishing to register for County, State and Federal elections
will be able to obtain a separate registration form from the town offices.
 Absentee Ballots:
 
Those wishing to vote by absentee ballot must submit an absentee ballot application form.  This form is available at the town office or can be downloaded at the following link. APPLICATION FOR ABSENTEE BALLOT  Open the form, print it and return the completed form in person or by mail to the town offices.
  Be sure to allow for mailing time when applying for an absentee ballot,
you will be sent a ballot upon receipt of your application.
 

Your completed ballot must then be received by close of business on October 1, 2007.

Please call the town office at 301-271-7313 with any questions regarding
 Voter Registration, Absentee Ballots, or any other questions regarding the voting process.

Thurmont Candidate Debate

2009 Candidates Debate

The Thurmont Lions Club sponsored a Candidates Debate on Tuesday Sept. 22, 2009.  Lions members Vic Jagow was Master of Ceremonies and introduced the candidates while Lion Glenn Rickard acted as time keeper.  Vickie Grinder of the Thurmont TImes served as moderator and presented the prepared questions to the candidates.  At the close of the prepared questions there was an opportunity for residents to pose questions to the candidates.  The candidates each had three minutes to answer each question.  The debate was televised live and is available for viewing by clicking this link : Candidates Debate Video or by going to the Streaming Video & Archived Video page.
