[ARCHIVED] Scam Alert

Scams have become an invasion of our peaceful and private lives. They occur every day by telephone, internet, and mail. Please remember to never provide any solicitor with your account numbers, or your personal information. If you are told you won money and it sounds too good to be true; it isn’t true. Keep in mind that scam artist have gone to great lengths to make their scam sound and look very real and convincing. Most recent scams include: a relative has been involved in an accident and needs money; or a relative has been detained by the police and needs money to be released; or the caller states there are issues with past taxes, money is owed to the IRS, and if not paid over the phone the Thurmont Police will be coming to their house to arrest them. If you are contacted by any means and it sounds like a scam, contact the Thurmont Police Department. The Police Department will document the fraud and attempt to confirm that the solicitation is a scam. Most of all do not send them money. Also keep in mind, the IRS will never call you and demand payment; nor require you to use a specific payment method; or threaten to have you arrested by local police.
